With the release of our new e.p imminent a tale of our time at Mwnci studios is in order! Last February Regime decided to give up their day jobs and spend a week with their good friend Jethro Chaplin at Mwnci studios.

The coolest and most important instrument was first on the agenda… the drums. We went for quite a boomy live sound with the drums, no cushion in bass drum and not much dampening on the heads. The separate booths for amps at Mwnci studios enabled us to record the songs altogether which has given the new e.p a really nice feel. We kept the drums from these sessions and then spent two days overdubbing guitar and bass.

The guys did such a great job recording their guitar parts; it meant they had some spare time on their hands. They used it wisely, watching turtles having sex (as recommended by Jethro) and the worst own goals of all time on you tube.

Vocals came next, after Jez finished his main vocals we called ‘Rent-a-Gang’ and Billy, Toby and Chilz turned up ready to shout like men into the microphone with the rest of the band. Unfortunately, Theo got a bit carried away and his girlish screams were taking away from the manliness of the group. Security was called and he was swiftly removed! Ben James (formerly of Babyhead) also came down and did an awesome job of putting some scratching on the track ‘Fools and Horses’ can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

We spent the last day of our stint at Mwnci studios recording: hoovers, duct tape, rape impressions (victim and perpetrator), Tibetan singing bowls, synths, shakers and percussion. (That list was in order of importance)

We had an awesome time at Mwnci studios, get yourselves down there. It’s a great environment for making music and generally having a good laugh. Big respect goes to Jethro Chaplin (Or as I like to call him Dr J) for doing such a fine job recording and mixing our tracks and for putting up with us for a whole week. Can’t wait for you all to hear the results!

Here is a vid of one of the tracks ‘Queenie’

The Naked And Famous have been in and out of Mwnci over the summer. Here is what they had to say.

“Mwnci Studios has very quickly become a second home for us during this crazy year of touring. Actually I suppose it’s more of a first home considering hotels are the only other thing we’ve stayed in since moving to the UK in January. We were after a space we could start getting creative in again, plus demo out some new tracks, do a couple of final recordings for unfinished songs, and also just be able to relax in after such a full on schedule. It had all the facilities we needed for writing, rehearsing, and recording, along with some seriously amazing catering (home cooked meals and fresh food again!). Here’s a few shots showing what we got up to on our last visit…”

Harry Keyworth has just finished recording his ep at Mwnci Studios.

Over the past Few months Harry has been working on various different projects mostly involving session work for Mwnci studios, Horsepower Productions and artists such as Katie B. He will also be writing some commissioned tracks for Audio Network for media publishing. More recently Harry has been working on his solo acoustic material and putting together a live act that will start performing this year. Meanwhile he will be concentrating on new material for his forthcoming album.

A mix of a de-tuned acoustic percussive playing style textured with choral vocals. Harry’s been influnced by John Martin, Jose Gonzales, Jeff Buckley and Bonobo. “A mix of everything I”ve ever heard….I guess.” Harry has an unique style combining fantastic guitar skills with his dulcet vocal tones.

Jethro completed the mixes for four of his tracks which have already appeared on BBC introducing and brought the attention to the mighty Audio Network for publishing purposes. In Harry”s own words, “I’m really happy with the way the tracks turned out, a very relaxing recording experience and I’ll definitely be back soon to do some more!”

———

Brigade:

In the summer of 2010, guided by producer Gethin Woolcock, Brigade hammered out their awesome new EP ‘Love Is A Duel’. This latest offering was released on the cover of Rock Sound Magazine back in December.

“Seven years into their career, the four-piece’s new EP, ‘Love Is A Duel’, underlines just how vital this band still are for UK music. It was recorded at the isolated spot of Mwnci Studios in West Wales with Gethin Woolcock, who co-produced the band’s first album, ‘Lights’; super-producer Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Oceansize, Biffy Clyro) volunteered his services to mix it, having previously produced their second album, ‘Come Morning We Fight’.”

Lethargy:

The first ever paying customers through the door back in 2004! Lethargy returned in late 2010 to track their new album led by Producer extraordinaire Will Maya ( Panic Cell/Brigade/Breed 77)

“Mwnci Studio is by far the best residential recording studio Wales has to offer, if not the UK. I’ve worked and recorded in many studios, including Rockfield but none of them (apart from Mwnci) can offer a complete escape from civilization so you can focus on the most important thing: the music.

With the tranquil surroundings and the constant feeling of being back in time in an age when things were simpler, this residential recording studio is nothing but inspiring for any artist. Plus Jethro is about as cool as they come and has some cracking gear! I’ve made 2 albums at Mwnci so far and will be going back when my next project is ready to track.”

“A beautiful studio with some beautiful houses in a beautiful valley. We went and had one of the best holidays of our lives and came back with a long player. A truly unique and enchanting place. Massive thanks to Jethro!”
Wolf People.

Steeple is the first album proper from Wolf People and represents the emergence of a fully fledged band from the fragmented, haunted bedroom meanderings of their Tidings singles compilation, released earlier this year. Recorded in a converted chicken barn on the grounds of a 17th century Welsh mansion, Steeple takes on a heavier sound while maintaining the arabesque electric guitars, groove-laden drums and ethereal vocals that characterized its predecessor.

Check the band on Myspace or on there website here The band are signed to Indie label Jagjaguwar

‘Recording at Mwnci was fantastic. Jethro is an amazing engineer and has an amazing ability to get the sound from you want in your head into the track. The location provides an awesome opportunity to completely focus on the recording and getting the best possible end product. I am really pleased with the result of my couple of days there and have received nothing but good comments about the quality of the recording. I will definitely be back!!!!’
